The Clicking Sound:
I had an eerie feeling I was being followed. I was on my way home from the hospital, after a hard day's work on the evening shift. It was a dark and stormy night; the streetlights reflected from the puddles of water like sparkling diamonds thrown carelessly about by a deranged giant. As I urged my weary feet to take me as quickly as possible home, I only had thoughts of my relaxing warm bath and comfortable bed.
I turned and looked behind me but saw nothing - not even a shadow. Telling myself not to be silly, I nevertheless tried to quicken my pace.
Then I heard it - a clicking noise. It came from behind me, and sounded like the buckle on a man's shoe that had come undone. When I stopped, the sound stopped. When I continued, so did it. My heart was racing now - what was happening? Who was this person? What did he want?
I searched frantically in my purse for my cellular phone. Then the unthinkable happened; I dropped the purse and some of the contents spilled out! Thinking I was done for now, I frenziedly replaced them in the purse, and started to run! I thought my heart would burst from my chest! I got to my apartment, and opened the door with my key which luckily I had placed in my coat pocket.
The relief I felt when I had entered the apartment and closed the door safely behind me, was unsurpassed! I tried desperately to catch my breath, all the while
wondering who it was that had been following me. I knew that I was very lucky.
As I made my way up the stairs to my room, I heard the clicking sound again! Oh God! What could be happening! There was no way I could have been followed into the apartment! I locked my bedroom door, put my purse on the bed, and took out my phone. That was when that I noticed that the buckle on my bag had come undone! I realised that this was the cause of the clicking sound that I had heard! I laughed, a little wildly, with relief, feeling a little foolish at the same time.
I vowed never to tell anyone of my little adventure on that dark stormy night. And I never have!
